After nearly 11 months of no visible activity we're happy to announce a new release of the Xiph QuickTime Components!
This release introduces the ability to produce Ogg files and encode video and audio content into Theora and Vorbis, respectively. Save directly to Ogg from iMovie or other QuickTime-based application!
Other new features include support for 5.1 multichannel audio (Vorbis and FLAC) in Ogg files and progressive loading. The latter isn't fully finished and we are working on the remaining issue, but it makes opening large files less painful already. See release notes for the details.
Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files, while not as common as.wma, MP3, and AAC files, are favored by many audiophiles who prefer the quality of their sound. Regrettably, none of these file types are.
- An Ogg Vorbis file should just be a Theora movie without video. Just like QuickTime is a container that can old several different codecs, so is Ogg. The libraries I'm using weren't letting it happen, but hopefully one day I'll get it all working.
- Ogg Vorbis (libvorbis) is a patent-free, royalty-free, non-proprietary, multiplatform and open source software project implemented in C and designed to provide a general-purpose compressed audio format, which can be used for encoding mid to high quality audio files. Microsoft Windows and Mac.
- How to Play Ogg on Mac. Ogg can be played on your Mac using Ogg player software such as iTunes or Music Man. ITunes will play Ogg once you’ve installed the Xiph Ogg QuickTime Component. Installation has been simplified. XiphQT now comes in a single, statically-linked component bundle and doesn't require any additional frameworks, so you can simply drag'n'drop to install it. And there are two binary packages available: full and decoders-only.
No Windows binaries are available at the moment, hopefully win32 port will be ready soon.
